So, it’s time to start looking into purchasing new windows. Maybe they have been damaged by a storm, or maybe you are looking to be more energy efficient. Whatever your reason for new windows, it can get a little overwhelming if you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for. Luckily, the window experts at Berg Home Improvements know a thing or two about choosing the right replacement window and have shared some insight into finding the right ones for you. Read on to discover what you should be looking at when choosing your new windows!

Consider Style

You may think that a window is just a window, but you’d be surprised to discover how many different types of styles there are out there! While there are many options, we are only going to focus on the four most common styles of windows, including:

  • Single and Double-Hung: These are, hands down, the most common type of windows, and can be found in most homes. Single/double-hung windows consist of both the window pane and the inner frame. These windows open and close by sliding up and down. Single-hung windows open only from the bottom, while double-hung windows will open from both ways.
  • Awning: Much like their name suggests, these windows, when open, look like an awning. Awning windows are hinged on the top and bottom and will open by tilting outwards.
  • Casement: Casement windows typically consist of one large pane and are hinged vertically. These windows open by swinging outward and are typically controlled by a lever or crank-life device.
  • Slider: Again, as their name suggests, slider windows open and close by sliding from side to side. These are great windows for those who have minimal space and who are looking for a sleek design.

The style you choose for your window will depend on various factors, including the size of the window you are replacing, the exterior design of your home, and, of course, your personal preferences.

Pick the Best Material

Windows come in various materials, but that doesn’t mean they are all made the same. The best material for your windows is dependent on how much time you are willing to spend on maintenance, as well as where in the world you live. For example, wooden window frames are a classic touch to any home, but they require a bit more maintenance than vinyl and vinyl-coated windows. If you are not interested in restaining your wooden windows once every two or three years, wooden windows might not be for you.

On the other side of the maintenance spectrum, vinyl windows are a great low-maintenance option. They are growing in popularity in homes across the country due to their favorable maintenance and their phenomenal insulation properties. If you are interested in the look of wood but don’t want to put in the time for regular maintenance, vinyl-treated windows are a great option. They provide the best of both worlds with a vinyl-coated wood that lasts like vinyl by looks like normal wooden windows.
